巴黎是一次輕率的旅行，後來的康沃爾也是；凱瑟琳之後的生活就是英格蘭度夏地中海過冬的重復。她的身體在衰弱，她的創作力卻不斷旺盛，社交圈子也在增加。因為羅素的關系，凱結識了伍爾芙夫人。對於這兩位女作家的比較不可避免，她們相遇的時候，弗吉尼亞34歲，唯一出版的作品是《遠航》，那是以七年時間、兩次精神崩潰為代價的；凱瑟琳28歲，像十年前那樣生氣勃勃，她嘲笑著自己從前的作品，又滿懷信心地期待《幸福及其它故事》的出版。弗吉尼亞漸漸迷戀上這對來自貧民區的默里夫婦，可是凱瑟琳的忽冷忽熱讓弗吉尼亞常常摸不著頭腦。凱去世的時候，弗吉尼亞在日記里寫道：凱瑟琳的作品是「我唯一感到妒忌的作品」。或許伍爾芙夫人當時並沒有料到自己後來的聲名超過了凱瑟琳，不過她確實很快就感到了沒有對手的孤獨。
關於凱瑟琳我們知道些什麼？
她在惠靈頓出生，在楓丹白露去世。她臨終前的最後的一句話是：「我喜愛雨，我想要感到它們落到臉上的感覺。」她的死因，傳統的說法是肺炎，較新的版本是梅毒。她只活了34歲。
