巴黎是一次轻率的旅行，后来的康沃尔也是；凯瑟琳之后的生活就是英格兰度夏地中海过冬的重复。她的身体在衰弱，她的创作力却不断旺盛，社交圈子也在增加。因为罗素的关系，凯结识了伍尔芙夫人。对于这两位女作家的比较不可避免，她们相遇的时候，弗吉尼亚34岁，唯一出版的作品是《远航》，那是以七年时间、两次精神崩溃为代价的；凯瑟琳28岁，像十年前那样生气勃勃，她嘲笑着自己从前的作品，又满怀信心地期待《幸福及其它故事》的出版。弗吉尼亚渐渐迷恋上这对来自贫民区的默里夫妇，可是凯瑟琳的忽冷忽热让弗吉尼亚常常摸不着头脑。凯去世的时候，弗吉尼亚在日记里写道：凯瑟琳的作品是“我唯一感到妒忌的作品”。或许伍尔芙夫人当时并没有料到自己后来的声名超过了凯瑟琳，不过她确实很快就感到了没有对手的孤独。

她在惠灵顿出生，在枫丹白露去世。她临终前的最后的一句话是：“我喜爱雨，我想要感到它们落到脸上的感觉。”她的死因，传统的说法是肺炎，较新的版本是梅毒。她只活了34岁。
