And a poet said, "Speak to us of Beauty."
Where shall you seek beauty, and how shall you find her unless she herself be your way and your guide?
And how shall you speak of her except she be the weaver(编织工)of your speech?
The aggrieved(苦恼的,悲伤的)and the injured say, "Beauty is kind and gentle.
Like a young mother half-shy of her own glory she walks among us."
And the passionate(热情的)say, "Nay, beauty is a thing of might(力量,威力)and dread(惧怕,担心)
Like the tempest(暴风雨)she shakes the earth beneath us and the sky above us."
The tired and the weary(疲倦的)say, "beauty is of soft whisperings. She speaks in our spirit.
Her voice yields to(屈服于)our silences like a faint(微弱的,模糊的)light that quivers(颤抖)in fear of the shadow."
But the restless(不能安静的)say, "We have heard her shouting among the mountains,
And with her cries came the sound of hoofs(蹄),and the beating of wings and the roaring of lions."
At night the watchmen of the city say, "Beauty shall rise with the dawn from the east."
And at noontide the toilers(辛劳着)and the wayfarers(旅人,徒步旅行者)say, "we have seen her leaning (倾斜,倾向)over the earth from the windows of the sunset."
In winter say the snow-bound(被大雪困阻的), "She shall come with the spring leaping upon the hills."
And in the summer heat the reapers say, "We have seen her dancing with the autumn leaves, and we saw a drift
(漂流物,堆积物)of snow in her hair."
All these things have you said of beauty.
Yet in truth you spoke not of her but of needs unsatisfied,
And beauty is not a need but an ecstasy(入迷).
It is not a mouth thirsting nor an empty hand stretched forth,
But rather a heart enflamed(燃烧) and a soul enchanted(施魔法,是迷惑).
It is not the image you would see nor the song you would hear,
But rather an image you see though you close your eyes and a song you hear though you shut your ears.
It is not the sap(树液)within the furrowed(有犁沟的,有皱纹的)bark(树皮), nor a wing attached to a claw
But rather a garden for ever in bloom and a flock of angels for ever in flight.
People of Orphalese, beauty is life when life unveils(揭开,除去面纱) her holy(神圣的)face.
But you are life and you are the veil.
Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror.
But you are eternity and your are the mirror.
On Love
By Kahlil Gibran
When love beckons to you follow him, though his ways are hard and steep. And when his wings enfold you yield to him, though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you. And when he speaks to you believe in him, though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning. Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun, so shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth. Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself. He threshes you to make you naked. He sifts you to free you from your husks. He grinds you to whiteness. He kneads you until you are pliant; and then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast. All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.
But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure, then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor, into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.
Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not nor would it be possessed; for love is sufficient unto love.
When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather, I am in the heart of God." And think not you can direct the course of love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course. Love has no other desire but to fulfil itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires: To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night. To know the pain of too much tenderness. To be wounded by your own understanding of love; and to bleed willingly and joyfully. To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving; to rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy; to return home at eventide with gratitude; and then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

每每念及第一句“When love beckons to you, follow him, though his ways are hard and steep”都会有一种奇妙的感觉——这才是被多巴胺迷惑了神智的爱情啊,怎么可能会变成腐烂的水果呢??!!
John O'hara to His Daughter
TLS,1 p.Mrs. Doughty
Quogue, Long Island
16 September 1962, Sunday
My dear:
Well, here we are — but not here. You at St. Tim's, Sister in Princeton, and me in Quogue, and another brand new year is about to start for you. For me, too. I always seem to approach the autumn in the frame of mind that spring inces in most people. The excitement of new things; the new plays, the new books, new clothes, etc., etc., etc. At the same time the autumn for me is a season of a sweet melancholy that is hard to explain. I love the early evenings, the leaves burning, the lights in houses.
It is the beginning of a big year for you, in many respects your biggest so far. By the time June comes around you will be 18, and graating from school. In the past week or so I have called you “Kid” but subconsciously I have been doing that because your kid days are over, or just about. I suspect that you are going through the experience of first love, and no matter what else happens, after that experience you are never a kid again.
Most of the nice things we associate with being a kid are okay — while you are still kid. But you gain more than you lose. You gain in understanding standing, in appreciation of people, in understanding and appreciation of yourself. You begin to see the wisdom in that quotation I have so often repeated to you: to thine own self be true. Every year at this time I have repeated that quotation to you, and the time is not really too far distant when you will be passing it on to your own children. It is probably the best single piece of advice I can give you, or you can give them.
You have done well, and I am pleased with you, not only for what you have done, but for what you are. As Miss Finnegan said to Sister, “Wylie has the right reactions.” So good luck in your Senior Year, and always know that the old man loves you very much.
Always
Dad

The soul of man under Socialism
The Selfish Giant
The Model Millionaire
The Happy Prince
The Devoted Friend
Nightingale and the Rose
